Cleaning the Rugs
For your rug’s daily care at home, it is essential to use a vacuum cleaner with the correct accessory for rugs and mats. Do not vacuum it with the brush accessory; this is for parquet flooring and if it is used on a rug it can pull on the strands and make it lose wool. You should vacuum your rug three times a week or whenever you think is necessary. If a thread ever sticks out from the surface of the rug, cut it level.
Some people have a place to hang their rug and beat it with a wicker paddle; if you do this, do not give the rug a beating, do it gently.
When you wash your rug, it is essential that you give it to a specialist. If you are in or near Madrid or Barcelona, give us a call and we will happily recommend you our favourites.
There is always a chance that you’ll drop a glass of wine, a coffee or a Coca Cola on your rug. These products leave the worst mark because they can stain the rug. It is essential that you act immediately and absorb all the liquid with absorbent kitchen roll. Then prepare a solution of warm water and mild soap straight away and scrub the stained area with a cloth soaked in this solution. Repeat this as many times as you need, changing the cloth (use a white cotton cloth so that it doesn’t fade). Finally, use a damp clean cloth steeped only in water and then dry the affected area, first with a towel and then with a hairdryer. Use the same technique for animal urine.
You can remove bloodstains with hydrogen peroxide; pour a little bit over the stain and then use kitchen roll to absorb all the liquid. Then use the same technique recommended for stains. Hydrogen peroxide is a great way to remove stains.
